Bending of plates
Builds on Biharmonic plate equationKirchhoff–Love plate theory
Definition
Let a thin isotropic plate have mid-plane , thickness , Young's modulus , Poisson's ratio and bending stiffness . Let be a transverse load per unit area, and let each part of be clamped, simply supported or free. The plate bending problem in Kirchhoff–Love theory is to find the deflection such that:
- in , the biharmonic plate equation.
- On a clamped edge, and .
- On a simply supported edge, and the normal bending moment vanishes.
- On a free edge, and the Kirchhoff effective shear force vanishes, where is the tangent direction.
The bending stresses then are for , with the bending moments of the plate.
Remarks
Example: a circular plate of radius , clamped at its edge and under a uniform load , has . Check: in polar form and , so , and . The centre deflection is .
Non-example: on a simply supported circular plate satisfies clause 1 and , but not , since its curvature at the edge is not zero. The simply supported solution is a different function.
The largest stress magnitude in the plate is at a face, where is the largest principal bending moment.
