Statement

Let 1≤m<n1 \le m < n be integers, and let ℋm\mathcal{H}^m be the mm-dimensional Hausdorff measure on ℝn\R^n. Let G(n,m)G(n, m) be the Grassmannian of mm-dimensional linear subspaces of ℝn\R^n, with its unique probability measure γn,m\gamma_{n,m} that is invariant under the orthogonal group. For V∈G(n,m)V \in G(n, m), let PV ⁣:ℝn→VP_V \colon \R^n \to V be the orthogonal projection onto VV. Let E⊆ℝnE \subseteq \R^n be ℋm\mathcal{H}^m-measurable with ℋm(E)<∞\mathcal{H}^m(E) < \infty.

  1. EE is purely mm-unrectifiable if and only if ℋm(PV(E))=0\mathcal{H}^m(P_V(E)) = 0 for γn,m\gamma_{n,m}-almost every V∈G(n,m)V \in G(n, m).
  2. If EE is mm-rectifiable and ℋm(E)>0\mathcal{H}^m(E) > 0, then ℋm(PV(E))>0\mathcal{H}^m(P_V(E)) > 0 for γn,m\gamma_{n,m}-almost every V∈G(n,m)V \in G(n, m).

Remarks

Part 2 is the easier half. A rectifiable set of positive measure has an approximate tangent plane WW at almost every point, and for almost every VV the projection PVP_V is injective on WW. Then PVP_V is bi-Lipschitz on a piece of EE of positive measure, so the projection has positive measure. Part 1 is the deep half; Besicovitch proved it for m=1m = 1 and n=2n = 2, and Federer proved the general case. Example: the four-corner Cantor set in ℝ2\R^2 has positive and finite ℋ1\mathcal{H}^1 measure and is purely 11-unrectifiable, so almost all of its projections onto lines have length zero.

Going deeper

For a student

A set EE of finite measure splits as E=R∪PE = R \cup P with RR rectifiable and PP purely unrectifiable. The theorem says that almost every projection of EE sees only RR. It is the model for many later results that characterise rectifiability by densities, tangent measures or singular integrals. It is used in the study of removable sets for bounded analytic functions, through the analytic capacity of planar sets.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
