Beta reduction
Builds on Lambda calculusTransitive closure
Definition
Let be the set of terms of the lambda calculus, taken up to renaming of bound variables. For terms and a variable , let denote the capture-avoiding substitution of for the free occurrences of in . A -redex is a term of the form , and its contractum is .
One-step -reduction is the least binary relation on with these properties.
- for all , and .
- If , then , and .
Multi-step -reduction is the reflexive transitive closure of . -conversion is the least equivalence relation that contains .
Remarks
Example: . Each step contracts a redex by clause 1, so .
Non-example: the term has no reduction step. It is an application, but its function part is the variable and not an abstraction, so it is not a redex, and its subterms contain no redex either.
Capture avoidance matters: reduces to , not to .
