Betti number
Definition
Let be a topological space, let be an integer, and let be the -th singular homology group of with integer coefficients. The -th Betti number of is the rank of the abelian group : a nonnegative integer or .
Remarks
When is finitely generated, it is isomorphic to with finite, so is the number of copies of . By the universal coefficient theorem, . Torsion is invisible to Betti numbers.
Example: for the torus , , and , so , , .
Non-example of a finite Betti number: an infinite discrete space has free abelian of infinite rank, so . For the real projective plane, is nonzero but has rank , so .
