Definition

Let (R,𝔪,k)(R, \mathfrak{m}, k) be a Noetherian local ring with residue field k=R/𝔪k = R/\mathfrak{m}. Let MM be a finitely generated RR-module. For each i≥0i \ge 0, the module Tor⁡iR(M,k)\operatorname{Tor}^R_i(M, k) is annihilated by 𝔪\mathfrak{m}, so it is a finite-dimensional kk-vector space. The ii-th Betti number of MM is βi(M)=dim⁡kTor⁡iR(M,k).\beta_i(M) = \dim_k \operatorname{Tor}^R_i(M, k).

In the graded case, R=k[x1,…,xn]R = k[x_1, \ldots, x_n] is graded by degree, 𝔪=(x1,…,xn)\mathfrak{m} = (x_1, \ldots, x_n), and MM is a finitely generated graded RR-module. Then each Tor⁡iR(M,k)\operatorname{Tor}^R_i(M, k) is graded, and the graded Betti numbers are βi,j(M)=dim⁡kTor⁡iR(M,k)j\beta_{i,j}(M) = \dim_k \operatorname{Tor}^R_i(M, k)_j.

Remarks

Equivalently, βi(M)\beta_i(M) is the rank of the free module FiF_i in a minimal free resolution ⋯→F1→F0→M→0\cdots \to F_1 \to F_0 \to M \to 0, that is, one whose differentials have all entries in 𝔪\mathfrak{m}.

For R=k[x,y]R = k[x, y] and M=k=R/(x,y)M = k = R/(x, y), the Koszul complex 0→R(−2)→R(−1)2→R→k→00 \to R(-2) \to R(-1)^2 \to R \to k \to 0 is a minimal resolution, so β0=1\beta_0 = 1, β1=2\beta_1 = 2, β2=1\beta_2 = 1, and the nonzero graded Betti numbers are β0,0=1\beta_{0,0} = 1, β1,1=2\beta_{1,1} = 2, β2,2=1\beta_{2,2} = 1.

The ranks in a resolution that is not minimal are not the Betti numbers. For M=R/(x)M = R/(x) over R=k[x]R = k[x], the resolution 0→R⊕R→R⊕R→M→00 \to R \oplus R \to R \oplus R \to M \to 0, with the second summand mapped identically, has ranks 2,22, 2, while β0=β1=1\beta_0 = \beta_1 = 1.

β0(M)\beta_0(M) is the least number of generators of MM, and the largest ii with βi(M)≠0\beta_i(M) \ne 0 is the projective dimension of MM when it is finite.
