Beurling–Ahlfors transform
Definition
Let be a smooth function with compact support. Its Beurling–Ahlfors transform is the function given by the principal value integral where is the Lebesgue area measure on . The operator extends uniquely to a bounded linear operator on for each with , also called the Beurling–Ahlfors transform.
Remarks
It is a singular integral operator of Calderón–Zygmund type, with the kernel . The principal value is needed: the kernel has absolute value , which is not integrable near in the plane, but its integral over each circle around is . With the Wirtinger derivatives and , it satisfies for every smooth compactly supported . Example: for , and , so . On the Fourier transform side, is multiplication by , where is the frequency variable; as , it is an isometry of onto itself. The norm of on is conjectured by Iwaniec to be ; this is an open problem.
