BGK collision operator

Builds on Boltzmann equationMaxwell–Boltzmann distributionKinetic theory of gases

Definition

Let f(v)≥0f(v) \ge 0 be a velocity distribution on ℝ3\R^3 with ∫(1+∣v∣2)f dv<∞\int (1 + \abs{v}^2) f \, dv < \infty and ∫f dv>0\int f \, dv > 0, not concentrated at a single velocity. Let nn, uu and TT be its density, bulk velocity and temperature, as in the kinetic theory of gases. Let M[f]M[f] be the Maxwell–Boltzmann distribution with the same nn, uu and TT. Let ν>0\nu > 0 be a collision frequency, which may depend on nn and TT. The BGK collision operator is QBGK(f)=ν(M[f]−f).Q_{BGK}(f) = \nu \big( M[f] - f \big). The BGK equation is the Boltzmann equation with QBGKQ_{BGK} in place of the Boltzmann collision operator: ∂tf+v⋅∇xf=ν(M[f]−f)\partial_t f + v \cdot \nabla_x f = \nu (M[f] - f).

Remarks

Since M[f]M[f] and ff have the same moments, ∫(1,v,∣v∣2) QBGK(f) dv=0\int (1, v, \abs{v}^2)\, Q_{BGK}(f) \, dv = 0: mass, momentum and energy are conserved. The H-theorem holds: log⁡M[f]\log M[f] is a combination of 11, vv and ∣v∣2\abs{v}^2, so ∫QBGK(f)log⁡M[f] dv=0\int Q_{BGK}(f) \log M[f] \, dv = 0, and therefore ∫QBGK(f)log⁡f dv=ν∫(M[f]−f)(log⁡f−log⁡M[f]) dv≤0\int Q_{BGK}(f) \log f \, dv = \nu \int (M[f] - f)(\log f - \log M[f]) \, dv \le 0. The operator is nonlinear in ff, through the dependence of M[f]M[f] on the moments of ff. In the Navier–Stokes limit, the BGK model gives Prandtl number 11, while the Boltzmann equation for a monatomic gas gives a value close to 2/32/3.

Example: if ff is itself a Maxwellian, then M[f]=fM[f] = f and QBGK(f)=0Q_{BGK}(f) = 0.

Non-example: the relaxation ν(M0−f)\nu (M_0 - f) towards a fixed Maxwellian M0M_0 is not the BGK operator. It does not conserve mass, momentum and energy when ff has moments different from those of M0M_0.
