Statement

Let n≥1n \ge 1 and let XX be an absolute neighborhood retract of covering dimension nn. Suppose that XX is homogeneous: for all points x,y∈Xx, y \in X there is a homeomorphism h ⁣:X→Xh \colon X \to X with h(x)=yh(x) = y. Then XX is a topological manifold of dimension nn.

Remarks

Every connected topological manifold is a homogeneous absolute neighborhood retract, so the conjecture asks for a converse. The conjecture is known to hold for n=1n = 1 and n=2n = 2. In dimension 33, it is known to imply the Poincaré conjecture. In general it is open. The finite dimension is needed: the Hilbert cube is a homogeneous compact absolute retract of infinite dimension that is not a manifold of any finite dimension.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
