Statement

Let (M,g)(M, g) be a connected complete Riemannian manifold of dimension n≥2n \ge 2, and let kk be a real number. Assume that the Ricci curvature satisfies Ric⁡(v,v)≥(n−1)k g(v,v)\operatorname{Ric}(v, v) \ge (n-1) k \, g(v, v) for every tangent vector vv. For r>0r > 0 let Vk(r)V_k(r) be the volume of a ball of radius rr in the simply connected nn-dimensional space form of curvature kk. Let p∈Mp \in M and let B(p,r)B(p, r) be the ball of radius rr about pp for the Riemannian distance. Let R=π/kR = \pi/\sqrt{k} if k>0k > 0 and R=∞R = \infty if k≤0k \le 0. Then the function r↦vol⁡B(p,r)Vk(r)r \mapsto \frac{\operatorname{vol} B(p, r)}{V_k(r)} is nonincreasing on (0,R)(0, R). Since it tends to 11 as r→0r \to 0, it follows that vol⁡B(p,r)≤Vk(r)\operatorname{vol} B(p, r) \le V_k(r) for 0<r<R0 < r < R.

Remarks

The idea of the proof: write the volume in geodesic polar coordinates about pp, with density 𝒜(t,θ)\mathcal{A}(t, \theta) along the geodesic in direction θ\theta, set to 00 beyond the cut locus. The Ricci bound and the Riccati equation for the mean curvature of distance spheres give that 𝒜(t,θ)/𝒜ˉk(t)\mathcal{A}(t, \theta) / \bar{\mathcal{A}}_k(t) is nonincreasing in tt, where 𝒜ˉk\bar{\mathcal{A}}_k is the density of the model. Integrating over θ\theta and tt gives the monotonicity of the ratio of volumes. The inequality vol⁡B(p,r)≤Vk(r)\operatorname{vol} B(p, r) \le V_k(r) is due to Bishop; the monotonicity is due to Gromov.

Example: for Ric⁡≥0\operatorname{Ric} \ge 0 the comparison is with ℝn\R^n, so vol⁡B(p,r)/(ωnrn)\operatorname{vol} B(p, r) / (\omega_n r^n) is nonincreasing, where ωn\omega_n is the volume of the unit ball of ℝn\R^n. For M=ℝnM = \R^n the ratio is constant equal to 11.

Going deeper

For a student

The inequality is the basic volume estimate under a Ricci lower bound. Its monotonicity gives the doubling property vol⁡B(p,2r)≤Cvol⁡B(p,r)\operatorname{vol} B(p, 2r) \le C \operatorname{vol} B(p, r) with CC depending only on nn, kk and an upper bound for rr. This is the input for Gromov's precompactness theorem for the Gromov–Hausdorff distance and for many estimates in geometric analysis.
