Definition
Let be a topological group. A Bohr compactification of is a pair of a compact Hausdorff group and a continuous homomorphism with this property. For every compact Hausdorff group and every continuous homomorphism , there is exactly one continuous homomorphism with .
Remarks
The Bohr compactification exists for every topological group, and it is unique up to a unique isomorphism compatible with the maps from . Example: if is a compact Hausdorff group, then is a Bohr compactification, since each factors as and the factor must be . Non-example: is not a Bohr compactification of . The continuous homomorphism from to does not factor through . A factor would give , which is false. If is a locally compact abelian group, is the Pontryagin dual of the group with the discrete topology, and is evaluation at . The map need not be injective, and its image is dense in .
