Boltzmann distribution

Builds on Probability distribution

Definition

Let II be a countable set of states, and let ε ⁣:I→ℝ\varepsilon \colon I \to \R assign an energy εi\varepsilon_i to each state ii. Let T>0T > 0 be the temperature, kBk_B the Boltzmann constant and β=1/(kBT)\beta = 1 / (k_B T). Assume that Z=∑i∈Ie−βεiZ = \sum_{i \in I} e^{-\beta \varepsilon_i} is finite. The Boltzmann distribution is the probability distribution on II given by pi=e−βεiZ,i∈I.p_i = \frac{e^{-\beta \varepsilon_i}}{Z}, \qquad i \in I.

Remarks

The factor e−βεie^{-\beta \varepsilon_i} is the Boltzmann factor, and ZZ is the partition function. For two states, pi/pj=e−β(εi−εj)p_i / p_j = e^{-\beta (\varepsilon_i - \varepsilon_j)}. Example: the levels εn=nℏω\varepsilon_n = n \hbar \omega, n≥0n \ge 0, of a quantum harmonic oscillator give Z=1/(1−e−βℏω)Z = 1 / (1 - e^{-\beta \hbar \omega}). So pn=(1−e−βℏω)e−nβℏωp_n = (1 - e^{-\beta \hbar \omega}) e^{-n \beta \hbar \omega}, a geometric distribution. Non-example: the levels εn=−1/n2\varepsilon_n = -1/n^2, n≥1n \ge 1, accumulate at 00, so ∑ne−βεn=∞\sum_n e^{-\beta \varepsilon_n} = \infty and no Boltzmann distribution exists. For a continuous set of states one replaces the sum by an integral against a reference measure.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
