Combinatorics Extremal combinatorics Theorem
Bondy's theorem
Builds on Family of setsSymmetric difference
Statement
Let and let be a set with elements. Let be distinct subsets of . Then there is an element such that the sets are still distinct.
Remarks
Suppose that no such exists. Then for each there are with symmetric difference ; join and by an edge labelled . This gives a graph on the sets with edges, all with distinct labels, so it contains a cycle. Going around the cycle, the symmetric differences of the edges combine to , but a symmetric difference of distinct singletons is not empty, a contradiction.
Example: with and . Removing leaves and , which are still distinct. The bound is sharp: for the sets become non-distinct after removing any element , since becomes .

For a student
The theorem is a small result of extremal set theory with a short graph proof. It says that distinct rows of a – matrix with columns stay distinct after deleting a suitable column. Its proof is a typical use of a graph to encode a family of sets.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
