Measure and integration Definition
Borel measure
Definition
Let be a topological space and let be its Borel σ-algebra, the smallest σ-algebra on that contains every open set. A Borel measure on is a measure .
Remarks
Example: the Dirac measure at a point , with if and otherwise, is a Borel measure. It is defined on all subsets of , hence on , and it is countably additive because lies in at most one set of a disjoint family.
Non-example: on , let and let be on countable sets and on the others. Then is a measure on , but does not contain the interval , so is not defined on all Borel sets and is not a Borel measure.
Conventions vary. Some authors call a measure on a σ-algebra containing , such as Lebesgue measure on the Lebesgue sets, a Borel measure. Some authors require in addition that for every compact set ; then counting measure on is not a Borel measure.
