Definition

Let XX be a locally compact Hausdorff space and let AA be an abelian group. A locally finite singular ii-chain on XX is a formal sum c=∑σaσσc = \sum_\sigma a_\sigma \sigma, possibly infinite, over singular ii-simplices σ ⁣:Δi→X\sigma \colon \Delta^i \to X with aσ∈Aa_\sigma \in A. It is required that every point of XX has a neighbourhood that meets the image of only finitely many σ\sigma with aσ≠0a_\sigma \neq 0. These chains form a group Cilf(X;A)C^{\mathrm{lf}}_i(X; A), and the usual boundary formula of singular homology defines ∂ ⁣:Cilf(X;A)→Ci−1lf(X;A)\partial \colon C^{\mathrm{lf}}_i(X; A) \to C^{\mathrm{lf}}_{i-1}(X; A) with ∂∘∂=0\partial \circ \partial = 0. The Borel–Moore homology of XX is the homology of this chain complex: HiBM(X;A)=Hi(C∙lf(X;A)).H^{\mathrm{BM}}_i(X; A) = H_i(C^{\mathrm{lf}}_\bullet(X; A)).

Remarks

The boundary of a locally finite chain is locally finite, because each face of σ\sigma has image inside the image of σ\sigma. If XX is compact, a locally finite chain is a finite chain, so HiBM(X;A)=Hi(X;A)H^{\mathrm{BM}}_i(X; A) = H_i(X; A). Some authors define the theory with sheaves. If X=Y∖ZX = Y \setminus Z for a finite CW complex YY and a subcomplex ZZ, then HiBM(X;A)≅Hi(Y,Z;A)H^{\mathrm{BM}}_i(X; A) \cong H_i(Y, Z; A).

Example: on X=ℝX = \R, the chain c=∑k∈ℤσkc = \sum_{k \in \Z} \sigma_k, where σk\sigma_k is the affine path from kk to k+1k+1, is locally finite, and ∂c=∑k({k+1}−{k})=0\partial c = \sum_k (\set{k+1} - \set{k}) = 0. Its class generates H1BM(ℝ;ℤ)≅ℤH^{\mathrm{BM}}_1(\R; \Z) \cong \Z, while H0BM(ℝ;ℤ)=0H^{\mathrm{BM}}_0(\R; \Z) = 0.

Non-example: the infinite sum ∑k≥1τk\sum_{k \ge 1} \tau_k, where τk\tau_k is the affine path from 00 to 1/k1/k in ℝ\R, is not locally finite: every neighbourhood of 00 meets all the τk\tau_k.

For an oriented nn-manifold MM, Poincaré duality takes the form HiBM(M;ℤ)≅Hn−i(M;ℤ)H^{\mathrm{BM}}_i(M; \Z) \cong H^{n-i}(M; \Z).
