Definition

Let FF be an algebraic number field with ring of integers π’ͺF\mathcal{O}_F, let Ξ£\Sigma be the set of field embeddings σ ⁣:Fβ†’β„‚\sigma \colon F \to \C, and let mβ‰₯2m \ge 2. Let bm∈H2mβˆ’1(BGL(β„‚)Ξ΄;ℝ)b_m \in H^{2m-1}(B\mathrm{GL}(\C)^\delta; \R) be the Borel class. It is a stable class in the cohomology of the discrete group GL(β„‚)\mathrm{GL}(\C), obtained from continuous cohomology of GLN(β„‚)\mathrm{GL}_N(\C) by the van Est isomorphism. For ΟƒβˆˆΞ£\sigma \in \Sigma let rΟƒr_\sigma be the composite K2mβˆ’1(π’ͺF)β†’Οƒβˆ—K2mβˆ’1(β„‚)=Ο€2mβˆ’1(BGL(β„‚)Ξ΄+)β†’hH2mβˆ’1(BGL(β„‚)Ξ΄;β„€)β†’βŸ¨bm,β‹…βŸ©β„,K_{2m-1}(\mathcal{O}_F) \xrightarrow{\sigma_*} K_{2m-1}(\C) = \pi_{2m-1}\big(B\mathrm{GL}(\C)^{\delta +}\big) \xrightarrow{h} H_{2m-1}(B\mathrm{GL}(\C)^\delta; \Z) \xrightarrow{\langle b_m, \cdot \rangle} \R, where hh is the Hurewicz map and the last map pairs with bmb_m in singular cohomology. The Borel regulator is the homomorphism rm ⁣:K2mβˆ’1(π’ͺF)→ℝΣ,x↦(rΟƒ(x))ΟƒβˆˆΞ£.r_m \colon K_{2m-1}(\mathcal{O}_F) \to \R^{\Sigma}, \qquad x \mapsto (r_\sigma(x))_{\sigma \in \Sigma}.

Remarks

Complex conjugation acts on ℝΣ\R^\Sigma through Ξ£\Sigma. The image of rmr_m lies in the subspace on which conjugation acts by the sign (βˆ’1)mβˆ’1(-1)^{m-1}. This subspace has dimension dmd_m, where dm=r1+r2d_m = r_1 + r_2 for mm odd and dm=r2d_m = r_2 for mm even. Borel proved that rmr_m has finite kernel and that its image is a lattice in this subspace. The covolume Rm(F)R_m(F) of this lattice is the Borel regulator of FF in degree mm. Let ΞΆFβˆ—(1βˆ’m)\zeta_F^*(1 - m) be the leading coefficient of the Dedekind zeta function at s=1βˆ’ms = 1 - m. Borel proved that ΞΆFβˆ—(1βˆ’m)/Rm(F)\zeta_F^*(1 - m) / R_m(F) is a nonzero rational number. Normalisations of bmb_m vary between authors by rational factors and powers of 2Ο€i2 \pi i.

Example: the analogue for m=1m = 1 is the map π’ͺFΓ—=K1(π’ͺF)→ℝΣ\mathcal{O}_F^\times = K_1(\mathcal{O}_F) \to \R^\Sigma, u↦(logβ‘βˆ£Οƒ(u)∣)Οƒu \mapsto (\log \abs{\sigma(u)})_\sigma, whose image has covolume equal, up to a simple factor, to the classical regulator.

Non-example: for F=β„šF = \Q and mm even, dm=0d_m = 0, so rmr_m is zero; this matches the finiteness of K2mβˆ’1(β„€)K_{2m-1}(\Z) for even mm.
