Definition
Let be a series of complex numbers. Its Borel transform is the power series The series is Borel summable if:
- has a positive radius of convergence;
- has an analytic continuation to an open set that contains the half-line , still written ;
- the improper integral converges.
The value of this integral is the Borel sum of the series.
Remarks
Example: for with a complex number , , and the integral converges exactly when , with value . So the geometric series is Borel summable to on the half-plane , also where it diverges, such as at , where the sum is . Non-example: for , the Borel transform has radius of convergence , so clause 1 fails. The method is regular: a convergent series is Borel summable, and its Borel sum is its ordinary sum. For a power series , the Borel sum is , which is a Laplace transform of up to a change of variable. A weaker variant, the weak Borel method, uses the limit of as , where are the partial sums.
