Definition
Let be or , and let be a locally convex space over . A subset absorbs a subset if there is such that for every with . is bornological if every convex balanced subset of that absorbs every bounded set of is a neighbourhood of .
Remarks
Equivalently, is bornological if and only if every linear map from to a locally convex space that maps bounded sets to bounded sets is continuous. Example: every normed space is bornological. If a convex balanced set absorbs the closed unit ball , then for some , so contains the ball of radius . More generally, every metrizable locally convex space is bornological. Non-example: let be an infinite-dimensional Banach space with its weak topology . Its weakly bounded sets are norm bounded, by the uniform boundedness principle, so the closed unit ball absorbs all of them. But the ball is not a weak neighbourhood of , since every weak neighbourhood of contains a nonzero linear subspace.
