Definition
Let and , and let be continuous. Let be a function. A (two-point) boundary value problem on is the problem of finding a function such that:
- is a solution of the ordinary differential equation for all , and
- satisfies the boundary conditions , where .
The problem is linear if the equation is linear in and is affine. A linear problem is homogeneous if satisfies the equation and the conditions.
Remarks
If the conditions only prescribe , that is, for a fixed , the problem is an initial value problem, not a boundary value problem in the proper sense. The same name is used for systems and for partial differential equations on a domain, with conditions on its boundary.
Example: on with and , that is, . The function solves the equation, and ; it is the only solution, since the general solution is .
Non-example of solvability: on with and is a boundary value problem without solution. Every solution with is , which vanishes at .
