Bounded variation
Builds on Total variationPartition of an interval
Definition
Let be real numbers and let be a function. For a partition given by , put The total variation of on is , where the supremum runs over all partitions of . The function has bounded variation on if .
Remarks
Example: a nondecreasing function on has bounded variation. For every partition the sum telescopes: , so .
Non-example: let and for . The function is continuous, but it does not have bounded variation. At the points the values are with alternating signs, so a partition through gives , and this sum diverges like the harmonic series.
The set of functions of bounded variation on is often written . Every function of bounded variation is bounded, since .
