Definition

Use geometrized Gaussian units. Fix real parameters MM (mass), aa (rotation) and QQ (charge), and set Σ=r2+a2cos⁡2θ,Δ=r2−2Mr+a2+Q2.\Sigma = r^2 + a^2\cos^2\theta, \qquad \Delta = r^2 - 2Mr + a^2 + Q^2. Let t∈ℝt \in \R, θ∈(0,π)\theta \in (0, \pi), ϕ\phi an angle of period 2π2\pi, and rr in an interval where Δ≠0\Delta \ne 0 and Σ≠0\Sigma \ne 0. Boyer–Lindquist coordinates are coordinates (t,r,θ,ϕ)(t, r, \theta, \phi) in which the Lorentzian metric reads g=−Δ−a2sin⁡2θΣ dt2−2asin⁡2θ (r2+a2−Δ)Σ dt dϕ+(r2+a2)2−Δa2sin⁡2θΣsin⁡2θ dϕ2+ΣΔ dr2+Σ dθ2.g = -\frac{\Delta - a^2\sin^2\theta}{\Sigma}\, dt^2 - \frac{2a\sin^2\theta\,(r^2 + a^2 - \Delta)}{\Sigma}\, dt\, d\phi + \frac{(r^2 + a^2)^2 - \Delta a^2 \sin^2\theta}{\Sigma}\sin^2\theta\, d\phi^2 + \frac{\Sigma}{\Delta}\, dr^2 + \Sigma\, d\theta^2. This is the Kerr–Newman metric; Q=0Q = 0 gives the Kerr metric.

Remarks

Example: for M=Q=0M = Q = 0, Δ=r2+a2\Delta = r^2 + a^2, the cross term vanishes, and g=−dt2+Σr2+a2 dr2+Σ dθ2+(r2+a2)sin⁡2θ dϕ2.g = -dt^2 + \frac{\Sigma}{r^2 + a^2}\, dr^2 + \Sigma\, d\theta^2 + (r^2 + a^2)\sin^2\theta\, d\phi^2. This is flat Minkowski space written with x=r2+a2sin⁡θcos⁡ϕx = \sqrt{r^2 + a^2}\sin\theta\cos\phi, y=r2+a2sin⁡θsin⁡ϕy = \sqrt{r^2 + a^2}\sin\theta\sin\phi, z=rcos⁡θz = r\cos\theta, the oblate spheroidal coordinates. For Q=0Q = 0 one checks Δ−a2sin⁡2θΣ=1−2MrΣ\frac{\Delta - a^2\sin^2\theta}{\Sigma} = 1 - \frac{2Mr}{\Sigma} and r2+a2−Δ=2Mrr^2 + a^2 - \Delta = 2Mr, which gives the usual form of the Kerr metric.

Non-example: the Kerr–Schild coordinates of the Kerr spacetime are not Boyer–Lindquist coordinates. In them the metric is flat Minkowski space plus a multiple of ℓ⊗ℓ\ell \otimes \ell for a null covector ℓ\ell, and it has several off-diagonal terms besides dt dϕdt\, d\phi.

The coordinates fail where Δ=0\Delta = 0, which are the horizons r±=M±M2−a2−Q2r_\pm = M \pm \sqrt{M^2 - a^2 - Q^2}, and on the axis sin⁡θ=0\sin\theta = 0. The fields ∂t\partial_t and ∂ϕ\partial_\phi are Killing vector fields, because no coefficient depends on tt or ϕ\phi.
