Definition
Let be an integer. The braid group on strands is the group with the presentation with generators and the relations
- for with ;
- for .
Remarks
Geometrically, is the braid in which strand crosses over strand and the other strands go straight down. By a theorem of Artin, this presentation gives the group of isotopy classes of geometric braids on strands. It is the Artin group of the Coxeter matrix of .
Example: is trivial and . The group is not abelian. The map respects both relations, so it gives a surjective homomorphism onto the symmetric group, and is not abelian. The kernel of is the pure braid group.
Non-example: the symmetric group with the transpositions satisfies relations 1 and 2, but it is not for . In the generators also satisfy , while in each has infinite order, since the map with respects the relations and sends to .
