Definition
Let be a finite group, let be a prime, and let be an algebraically closed field of characteristic . An element is -regular if its order is not divisible by ; let be the set of -regular elements. Let and be the groups of roots of unity of order prime to in and in the complex numbers. Fix a group isomorphism . Let be a representation of on a vector space over of finite dimension . For , the map has eigenvalues , listed with multiplicity. The Brauer character of is the function given by
Remarks
The eigenvalues lie in because with the order of , prime to . Such an isomorphism exists; it is usually fixed through a -modular system, and other choices change by a Galois automorphism. Example: for the trivial representation of degree , all eigenvalues are , so for every ; for this is , while the trace in is . Non-example: let and let , with the generator acting by . The generator is not -regular, so the Brauer character has no value there. It is defined only at the identity, with value . Brauer characters are constant on conjugacy classes, additive on short exact sequences, and . The irreducible Brauer characters are linearly independent, and their number is the number of conjugacy classes of -regular elements.

- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
