Bremsstrahlung
Builds on Electromagnetic radiation
Definition
Let a charged particle move past another charged particle and be accelerated by its Coulomb field. Assume the two are not bound before or after the encounter. Bremsstrahlung is the electromagnetic radiation emitted by the particle because of this acceleration. Thermal bremsstrahlung is the bremsstrahlung of a gas of free electrons and ions. In it the electrons have a Maxwell–Boltzmann distribution of velocities at a temperature .
Remarks
Example: let an electron of charge and mass pass an ion of charge at distance . Near closest approach its acceleration has size about , where is the vacuum permittivity. By the Larmor formula it radiates power proportional to the square of this acceleration. Non-example: radiation from an electron captured by an ion into a bound state is recombination radiation (free-bound), not bremsstrahlung, because the electron is bound after the event. Consider thermal bremsstrahlung of electrons of density and ions of density and charge . Its emissivity per unit frequency is proportional to times a slowly varying Gaunt factor. Its total power per unit volume is proportional to . Collisions between identical particles, such as electron–electron, give no dipole radiation, so in a non-relativistic plasma electron–ion encounters dominate.
