Definition
Consider a substance whose equilibrium pressure is a differentiable function of its volume along a given process, for example at constant temperature. The bulk modulus of the substance at volume is where is the derivative of . For an isotropic linear elastic solid with Lamé parameters and , a hydrostatic stress produces the volume strain with
Remarks
Example: an ideal gas at constant temperature has for a constant , so and .
Non-example: for an incompressible material the volume does not change under any pressure. So is not a function of , and the definition does not apply; one says informally that .
For the elastic solid, , and gives . In terms of Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio , , which tends to infinity as . The isothermal and adiabatic bulk moduli of a gas differ; for an ideal gas the adiabatic one is , where is the heat capacity ratio.
