Definition
Let be a finite group. A finite -set is a finite set with a group action of . Isomorphism classes of finite -sets form a commutative semiring under disjoint union and Cartesian product , where acts on by . The Burnside ring is the Grothendieck group of the additive monoid of this semiring, with the multiplication extended bilinearly. It is a commutative ring whose unit is the class of the one-point -set.
Remarks
As an abelian group, is free with basis the classes , where runs over representatives of the conjugacy classes of subgroups of . This holds because each finite -set is the disjoint union of its orbits, and the orbit is isomorphic to exactly when and are conjugate. Example: for , the basis is , the point, and , the free orbit with two elements. The product is a free -set with elements, so , and . Non-example: the set of isomorphism classes of finite -sets is not itself , since a nonempty -set has no additive inverse there. For a subgroup , the map , counting fixed points, extends to a ring homomorphism .
