Cap set problem
Builds on Finite fieldVector spaceBig O notation
Statement
Let and let be the vector space of dimension over the field with three elements. A cap set is a set that contains no three distinct elements with , that is, no three distinct points on a line. Let be the number of monomials with each and . Then every cap set satisfies . In particular as , in the sense of asymptotic notation.
Remarks
This bound is due to Ellenberg and Gijswijt, following a method of Croot, Lev and Pach for . The proof is an instance of the linear algebra method. The function if and otherwise, restricted to , is diagonal with nonzero entries, so its slice rank is . Writing and expanding, each monomial has degree at most in one of the three variables, which gives slice rank at most . Earlier bounds, by Fourier methods, were of the form .
Example: in the set is a cap set of size . The sums of its four triples of distinct points are , , and , none of which is . Cap sets of size larger than are known for large , so the base of the exponential lies between and .

For a student
The cap set problem is the analogue in of Roth's theorem on three-term arithmetic progressions, since three distinct points with form an arithmetic progression in . The polynomial proof is very short and gives a power saving, which Fourier methods could not. It introduced the slice rank of tensors and led to new bounds on related problems, such as sunflower-free families and matrix multiplication barriers. In the integers, by contrast, there are sets without three-term progressions of size , so the polynomial method does not transfer directly.
