Cartan connection
Builds on Principal bundle
Definition
Let be a Lie group and a closed subgroup of , with Lie algebras . Let be a smooth manifold with . A Cartan connection on modelled on is a principal -bundle together with a smooth -valued -form on such that:
- is a linear isomorphism for every .
- for every , where is the adjoint representation of restricted to .
- for every , where is the fundamental vector field of on .
Remarks
The curvature of is . Example: the model itself, with the left Maurer–Cartan form of . Clause 1 holds because is an isomorphism , and clauses 2 and 3 are standard properties of . Its curvature vanishes by the Maurer–Cartan equation, and a Cartan connection is locally isomorphic to this model exactly when . Non-example: a principal connection form on has values in , so it fails clause 1 unless and is a point. For the Euclidean group and , a torsion-free Cartan connection is the same as a Riemannian metric.
