Statement
Let be a space, let be a prime, and let be homogeneous classes, with the degree of . Write for the cup product.
- For , the Steenrod squares satisfy, for every ,
- For odd, the Steenrod reduced powers satisfy, for every ,
- For odd, the Bockstein homomorphism of is a derivation:
Remarks
The same formulas hold for the cross product , and the cup product case follows by pulling back along the diagonal . The cross product case is checked in the construction of the operations, which are built from a product-compatible map on cochains.
In terms of the total square , part 1 says that is a ring homomorphism of .
Example: let generate , so . Since and , one has . Then , so .

For a student
With the Cartan formula and the values on degree-one or degree-two generators, one computes all Steenrod operations on the cohomology of , and products of these. It also gives the Hopf algebra structure of the Steenrod algebra: the coproduct sends to . Milnor used this coproduct to describe the dual of the Steenrod algebra.
