Definition
Let be a field and let be a finite-dimensional associative algebra over . Let be representatives of the isomorphism classes of indecomposable projective left -modules. Let , where is the Jacobson radical of ; then represent the isomorphism classes of simple left -modules. The Cartan matrix of is the integer matrix . Here is the number of times occurs among the composition factors of .
Remarks
Example: has the single indecomposable projective , with composition series . Both factors are the simple module , so . Example: for the algebra of upper triangular matrices, is simple and has the factors on top and below, so . Non-example: the polynomial ring is not finite-dimensional, and its projective module has no composition series, so it has no Cartan matrix in this sense. Some authors use the transpose of . If is a splitting field for , for example algebraically closed, then . For the group algebra of a finite group over a splitting field of characteristic , Brauer showed that , where is the decomposition matrix, so is symmetric.
