Definition

Let 𝔤\mathfrak{g} be a finite-dimensional Lie algebra over a field FF, and let BB be a nondegenerate symmetric invariant bilinear form on 𝔤\mathfrak{g}. Let x1,…,xnx_1, \dots, x_n be a basis of 𝔤\mathfrak{g}, and let y1,…,yny_1, \dots, y_n be the dual basis, with B(xi,yj)=δijB(x_i, y_j) = \delta_{ij}. The Casimir element of (𝔤,B)(\mathfrak{g}, B) is ΩB=∑i=1nxiyi∈U(𝔤),\Omega_B = \sum_{i=1}^{n} x_i y_i \in U(\mathfrak{g}), where U(𝔤)U(\mathfrak{g}) is the universal enveloping algebra.

Remarks

The element ΩB\Omega_B does not depend on the choice of the basis, and it lies in the centre of U(𝔤)U(\mathfrak{g}). For a semisimple 𝔤\mathfrak{g} over a field of characteristic 00, the usual choice of BB is the Killing form. For a faithful representation ρ\rho of a semisimple 𝔤\mathfrak{g} in characteristic 00 one also uses the trace form Bρ(x,y)=tr⁡(ρ(x)ρ(y))B_\rho(x, y) = \tr(\rho(x)\rho(y)), and calls the image ρ(ΩBρ)\rho(\Omega_{B_\rho}) the Casimir operator of ρ\rho. Example: let FF have characteristic other than 22, and let 𝔤=𝔰𝔩2(F)\mathfrak{g} = \mathfrak{sl}_2(F) with basis e,f,he, f, h and B(x,y)=tr⁡(xy)B(x, y) = \tr(xy). Then B(e,f)=1B(e, f) = 1, B(h,h)=2B(h, h) = 2 and the other pairings vanish, so the dual basis of e,f,he, f, h is f,e,h/2f, e, h/2 and ΩB=ef+fe+12h2\Omega_B = ef + fe + \tfrac{1}{2} h^2. On F2F^2 one has ef=E11ef = E_{11}, fe=E22fe = E_{22} and h2=Ih^2 = I, so ΩB\Omega_B acts as 32I\tfrac{3}{2} I, a scalar as expected. Non-example: the element e2+f2+h2e^2 + f^2 + h^2 uses the basis itself instead of the dual basis, and it is not central, since [e,e2+f2+h2]=hf+fh−2eh−2he≠0[e, e^2 + f^2 + h^2] = hf + fh - 2eh - 2he \ne 0 in U(𝔤)U(\mathfrak{g}).
