Definition
Let be an oriented integral homology 3-sphere, let be a knot and let be an integer. Let be the result of Dehn surgery on with coefficient ; it is again an oriented integral homology -sphere. Let be the Alexander polynomial of , normalised so that and .
The Casson invariant is the unique function from oriented integral homology -spheres, up to orientation-preserving homeomorphism, to such that:
- , and
- for every , and as above,
Casson proved that such a function exists and is unique.
Remarks
Example: for a trefoil knot in , , so and . Since , clause 2 with gives . For the right-handed trefoil, is the Poincaré homology sphere with the orientation opposite to that of , and .
Further properties: , is additive under connected sum, and is congruent modulo to the Rokhlin invariant of .
