Definition

Let kk be a field and let S=k[x1,…,xn]S = k[x_1, \ldots, x_n] be the polynomial ring graded by total degree. For an integer jj, let S(−j)S(-j) be SS with grading shifted so that S(−j)d=Sd−jS(-j)_d = S_{d - j}. Let M≠0M \ne 0 be a finitely generated graded SS-module. Let 0→Fp→⋯→F1→F0→M→00 \to F_p \to \cdots \to F_1 \to F_0 \to M \to 0 be a minimal graded free resolution of MM, with Fi=⨁jS(−j)βi,jF_i = \bigoplus_j S(-j)^{\beta_{i,j}}. The numbers βi,j\beta_{i,j} are the graded Betti numbers of MM. The Castelnuovo–Mumford regularity of MM is reg⁡M=max⁡{j−i:βi,j≠0}.\operatorname{reg} M = \max \set{ j - i : \beta_{i,j} \ne 0 }.

Remarks

Let f∈Sf \in S be homogeneous of degree d≥1d \ge 1 and M=S/(f)M = S/(f). The minimal resolution is 0→S(−d)→S→M→00 \to S(-d) \to S \to M \to 0, so β0,0=1\beta_{0,0} = 1 and β1,d=1\beta_{1,d} = 1. Hence reg⁡M=max⁡(0,d−1)=d−1\operatorname{reg} M = \max(0, d - 1) = d - 1.

Minimality of the resolution is needed. Take S=k[x]S = k[x] and M=S/(x)M = S/(x), so that reg⁡M=0\operatorname{reg} M = 0. Add the exact summand S(−5)→S(−5)S(-5) \to S(-5) in homological degrees 11 and 00. The result is a non-minimal resolution with the pair (i,j)=(0,5)(i, j) = (0, 5), and it would give the wrong value 55.

An equivalent form uses local cohomology with respect to 𝔪=(x1,…,xn)\mathfrak{m} = (x_1, \ldots, x_n): reg⁡M=max⁡i{ai(M)+i}\operatorname{reg} M = \max_i \set{ a_i(M) + i }, where ai(M)a_i(M) is the largest degree dd with H𝔪i(M)d≠0H^i_{\mathfrak{m}}(M)_d \ne 0, and the maximum is over the ii with H𝔪i(M)≠0H^i_{\mathfrak{m}}(M) \ne 0. For a nonzero proper homogeneous ideal II, one has reg⁡I=reg⁡(S/I)+1\operatorname{reg} I = \operatorname{reg}(S/I) + 1.
