Definition

Let kk be a real number. Let MkM_k be the complete simply connected surface of constant curvature kk. It is the round sphere of radius 1/k1/\sqrt{k} if k>0k > 0, the Euclidean plane if k=0k = 0, and the hyperbolic plane of curvature kk if k<0k < 0. Let Dk=π/kD_k = \pi/\sqrt{k} if k>0k > 0 and Dk=∞D_k = \infty if k≤0k \le 0.

Let (X,d)(X, d) be a metric space. A geodesic segment in XX is a map c ⁣:[0,ℓ]→Xc \colon [0, \ell] \to X with d(c(s),c(t))=∣s−t∣d(c(s), c(t)) = \abs{s - t} for all s,ts, t. A geodesic triangle consists of three points of XX and a geodesic segment between each pair of them. A comparison triangle for it is a triangle in MkM_k with the same three side lengths. Each point pp on a side has a comparison point pˉ\bar p on the matching side, at the same distances from the ends.

The space XX is a CAT(kk) space if:

  1. any two points of XX at distance less than DkD_k are joined by a geodesic segment, and
  2. for every geodesic triangle of perimeter less than 2Dk2 D_k and all points p,qp, q on its sides, d(p,q)≤dMk(pˉ,qˉ)d(p, q) \le d_{M_k}(\bar p, \bar q).

Remarks

Example: ℝn\R^n with the Euclidean distance is CAT(0). Its geodesic triangles are flat triangles, and a comparison triangle in M0M_0 is congruent to it, so equality holds in clause 2.

Non-example: the unit round sphere S2S^2 is not CAT(0). Take the triangle with vertices on the equator at longitudes 00, π/2\pi/2 and the north pole; its sides have length π/2\pi/2. The midpoints of the two sides through the pole are at spherical distance π/3\pi/3. The comparison triangle in M0M_0 is equilateral with side π/2\pi/2, so the comparison points are at distance π/4<π/3\pi/4 < \pi/3. So clause 2 fails; the sphere is CAT(1).

A CAT(kk) space is also CAT(k′k') for every k′≥kk' \ge k. A complete simply connected Riemannian manifold is CAT(kk) for some k≤0k \le 0 exactly when its sectional curvature is at most kk. Metric trees are CAT(kk) for every kk.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
