Category of abelian groups
Builds on Abelian groupGroup homomorphism
Example
The category of abelian groups has the abelian groups as objects and the group homomorphisms between them as morphisms, with composition of maps. It is an abelian category. Each set is an abelian group under pointwise addition , and composition is bilinear. The trivial group is a zero object, and is both the product and the coproduct of and . Every homomorphism has a kernel and a cokernel . An injective homomorphism is the kernel of the projection . A surjective homomorphism is the cokernel of the inclusion of its kernel. So every monomorphism is a kernel and every epimorphism is a cokernel.
Remarks
is the model case of an abelian category: the FreydβMitchell embedding theorem says that each small abelian category embeds fully and exactly into a category of modules. It is also a full subcategory of the category of groups, but the coproducts differ: in the coproduct of and is , not the free product. The group is a generator, and is an injective object. is the same as the category of modules over the ring .
