Cauchy filter
Builds on Uniform spaceEntourageFilter
Definition
Let be a uniform space and let be a filter on . The filter is a Cauchy filter if for every entourage there is a set with . The uniform space is complete if every Cauchy filter on converges to a point of .
Remarks
The neighbourhood filter of a point is a Cauchy filter. Given an entourage , choose a symmetric entourage with and let , a member of . For one has and , so . On with its usual uniformity, the filter of sets that contain some interval is not a Cauchy filter. For , every member contains two points at distance , so no member has . In a metric space, a sequence is a Cauchy sequence if and only if the filter of its tails is a Cauchy filter. Every convergent filter is a Cauchy filter.
