Cauchy matrix
Definition
Let be a field, and let and be elements of with for all . The Cauchy matrix of these elements is the matrix with entries
Remarks
Example: with and the Cauchy matrix is ; here and . Non-example: is not a Cauchy matrix, because no entry can be . For , the Cauchy determinant is So a square Cauchy matrix is invertible exactly when the are distinct and the are distinct. Every square submatrix of a Cauchy matrix is again a Cauchy matrix.
