Manifolds and cell complexes CW complexes Theorem
Cellular approximation theorem
Statement
Let and be CW complexes with -skeleta and . A map is cellular if for all . Let be a continuous map, and let be a subcomplex such that restricted to is cellular. Then is homotopic relative to to a cellular map.
Remarks
The proof proceeds cell by cell, by induction on the dimension. The key lemma concerns a map from a closed -disk into a space obtained by attaching an -cell with . Such a map can be deformed so that it misses a point of the open cell, and then pushed off the cell by radial projection. Taking shows that every map is homotopic to a cellular map.
Example: give the CW structure with one -cell and one -cell, and let . Every map is homotopic to a cellular map, which sends into the -skeleton of , a single point. So for .
The theorem also shows that the inclusion induces an isomorphism on for and a surjection for .

For a student
Cellular approximation reduces many homotopy questions to combinatorics of cells. It gives the vanishing of for . It shows that the fundamental group of a CW complex depends only on its -skeleton. It also makes the maps induced on cellular chain complexes well defined. Its simplicial ancestor is the simplicial approximation theorem.
