Chain complex
Definition
Let be an additive category, for example the category of modules over a ring. A chain complex in consists of objects and morphisms , for , with where is the zero morphism .
Remarks
A cochain complex has objects and differentials with ; setting turns it into a chain complex. A complex is bounded if only finitely many are nonzero. One often writes for every , so that the condition reads .
Example: let and let be multiplication by for all . Then is multiplication by , which is on .
Non-example: let , with and the identity of and all other objects . Then , so this is not a chain complex.
