Definition

Let π’œ\mathcal{A} be an additive category and let (Cβˆ™,dC)(C_\bullet, d^C) and (Dβˆ™,dD)(D_\bullet, d^D) be chain complexes in π’œ\mathcal{A}. A chain map f ⁣:Cβˆ™β†’Dβˆ™f \colon C_\bullet \to D_\bullet is a family of morphisms fn ⁣:Cnβ†’Dnf_n \colon C_n \to D_n, one for each integer nn, such that dnD∘fn=fnβˆ’1∘dnCforΒ allΒ nβˆˆβ„€.d^D_n \circ f_n = f_{n-1} \circ d^C_n \quad \text{for all } n \in \Z.

Remarks

Chain maps are composed degreewise, and the identity chain map has fn=1Cnf_n = 1_{C_n}. With these, chain complexes in π’œ\mathcal{A} form a category, often written Ch(π’œ)\mathrm{Ch}(\mathcal{A}). A chain map sends ker⁑dnC\ker d^C_n into ker⁑dnD\ker d^D_n and im⁑dn+1C\im d^C_{n+1} into im⁑dn+1D\im d^D_{n+1}.

Example: let Cβˆ™=Dβˆ™C_\bullet = D_\bullet be the complex with C1=C0=β„€C_1 = C_0 = \Z, d1d_1 multiplication by 33, and Cn=0C_n = 0 otherwise. Then f1=f0=f_1 = f_0 = multiplication by 22 is a chain map, since 3β‹…2x=2β‹…3x3 \cdot 2x = 2 \cdot 3x for xβˆˆβ„€x \in \Z.

Non-example: in the same complex, take f1=1β„€f_1 = 1_{\Z} and f0=0f_0 = 0. Then d1∘f1d_1 \circ f_1 is multiplication by 33 but f0∘d1=0f_0 \circ d_1 = 0, so the square in degree 11 does not commute.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
