Character of a representation

Definition
Let be a group and let be a field. Let be a representation of on a vector space over of finite dimension. The character of is the function given by where is the trace of a linear map. The degree of is . When has characteristic , the degree equals ; in characteristic the value is only modulo . A character is irreducible if is irreducible.
Remarks
Example: let act on by permuting coordinates. The matrix of a permutation has a on the diagonal exactly at the points fixed by , so is the number of fixed points of . This gives , and . Non-example: let act by shifting on the space of finitely supported sequences. This space has infinite dimension, so the trace is not defined, and the representation has no character. Every character satisfies , so it is constant on each conjugacy class; such functions are called class functions. Isomorphic representations have the same character. For a finite group over , the converse holds as well.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
