Character of an abelian group
Definition
Let be an abelian group, and let be the circle group. A character of is a group homomorphism , that is, a map with for all . If is a topological group, a character of is usually required to be continuous as well.
Remarks
Example: for and an integer , the map is well defined, because . It is a character, since . Non-example: the map , , satisfies the homomorphism rule, but its values do not have absolute value , so it is not a character. The characters of form an abelian group under pointwise multiplication , with identity the trivial character and inverse . This group is the character group, often written . For a finite group every homomorphism to takes values in , so some texts define characters as homomorphisms to .
