Definition
Let be a finite group. Let be the distinct irreducible complex characters of , and let be the conjugacy classes of , with . The character table of is the matrix with entries . By convention is the trivial character and .
Remarks
The table is square: . Example: the symmetric group has three classes, of the identity, the transpositions and the -cycles. Its three irreducible characters are the trivial one, the sign, and a character of degree . The last one is the permutation character on three points minus the trivial character. Its table is The check: , and the rows are orthogonal for the weighted inner product of the Schur orthogonality relations. Non-example: the matrix with rows only is not the character table of , because it omits the irreducible character . Non-isomorphic groups can have the same character table: the dihedral group of order and the quaternion group do.
