Definition

Let GG be a topological group, let RR be an abelian group and let k≥0k \ge 0 be an integer. Write Hk(X;R)H^k(X; R) for singular cohomology with coefficients in RR. A characteristic class of degree kk for principal GG-bundles is a rule cc that assigns to each principal GG-bundle P→XP \to X a class c(P)∈Hk(X;R)c(P) \in H^k(X; R), such that:

  1. If P→XP \to X and P′→XP' \to X are isomorphic, then c(P)=c(P′)c(P) = c(P').
  2. For every continuous map f ⁣:Y→Xf \colon Y \to X, c(f∗P)=f∗c(P)c(f^* P) = f^* c(P), where f∗Pf^* P is the pullback bundle and f∗f^* on the right is the induced map in cohomology.

Remarks

The same definition applies to real or complex vector bundles of a fixed rank, which correspond to principal GLn(ℝ)GL_n(\R)- or GLn(ℂ)GL_n(\C)-bundles. Over CW complexes, characteristic classes of degree kk correspond bijectively to elements of Hk(BG;R)H^k(BG; R): the class uu gives c(P)=fP∗uc(P) = f_P^* u, where fP ⁣:X→BGf_P \colon X \to BG classifies PP.

Example: for real line bundles, the first Stiefel–Whitney class w1∈H1(X;ℤ/2ℤ)w_1 \in H^1(X; \Z/2\Z) is a characteristic class. For the Möbius line bundle MM over S1S^1, w1(M)w_1(M) is the generator of H1(S1;ℤ/2ℤ)H^1(S^1; \Z/2\Z), while w1w_1 of the trivial bundle is 00.

Non-example: for line bundles over spaces XX, the rule c(P)=1∈H0(X;ℤ)c(P) = 1 \in H^0(X; \Z) if XX is compact and c(P)=0c(P) = 0 otherwise fails clause 2. For the inclusion f ⁣:[0,1]→ℝf \colon [0, 1] \to \R and the trivial bundle PP over ℝ\R, c(f∗P)=1c(f^* P) = 1 but f∗c(P)=0f^* c(P) = 0.

Clause 2 implies that a trivial bundle X×GX \times G has c(X×G)=0c(X \times G) = 0 when k>0k > 0, since it is pulled back from a point.
