Definition

Let XX be a paracompact space and let EE be a complex vector bundle of rank rr on XX. Let ci=ci(E)∈H2i(X;ℚ)c_i = c_i(E) \in H^{2i}(X; \Q) be its Chern classes in rational singular cohomology. For k≥1k \ge 1 let sks_k be the polynomial with sk(e1,…,ek)=x1k+⋯+xNks_k(e_1, \ldots, e_k) = x_1^k + \cdots + x_N^k for N≥kN \ge k. Here eie_i are the elementary symmetric polynomials in x1,…,xNx_1, \ldots, x_N, so sks_k expresses power sums through them. The Chern character of EE is ch⁡(E)=r+∑k≥1sk(c1,…,ck)k!∈∏k≥0H2k(X;ℚ).\operatorname{ch}(E) = r + \sum_{k \ge 1} \frac{s_k(c_1, \ldots, c_k)}{k!} \in \prod_{k \ge 0} H^{2k}(X; \Q).

Remarks

Formally, if x1,…,xrx_1, \ldots, x_r are the Chern roots of EE, then ch⁡(E)=ex1+⋯+exr\operatorname{ch}(E) = e^{x_1} + \cdots + e^{x_r}. The first terms are ch⁡(E)=r+c1+12(c12−2c2)+16(c13−3c1c2+3c3)+⋯\operatorname{ch}(E) = r + c_1 + \tfrac{1}{2}(c_1^2 - 2c_2) + \tfrac{1}{6}(c_1^3 - 3c_1c_2 + 3c_3) + \cdots. It satisfies ch⁡(E⊕F)=ch⁡(E)+ch⁡(F)\operatorname{ch}(E \oplus F) = \operatorname{ch}(E) + \operatorname{ch}(F) and ch⁡(E⊗F)=ch⁡(E)ch⁡(F)\operatorname{ch}(E \otimes F) = \operatorname{ch}(E) \operatorname{ch}(F), so it gives a ring homomorphism from topological K-theory K0(X)K^0(X) to rational cohomology.

Example: on ℂℙ1\mathbb{CP}^1 let h∈H2(ℂℙ1;ℚ)h \in H^2(\mathbb{CP}^1; \Q) be the positive generator, so h2=0h^2 = 0. The line bundle 𝒪(n)\mathcal{O}(n) has c1=nhc_1 = nh, so ch⁡(𝒪(n))=enh=1+nh\operatorname{ch}(\mathcal{O}(n)) = e^{nh} = 1 + nh.

Non-example: the total Chern class c(E)=1+c1+⋯+crc(E) = 1 + c_1 + \cdots + c_r is not additive: c(E⊕F)=c(E)c(F)c(E \oplus F) = c(E) c(F). So cc does not give a homomorphism of additive groups from K-theory, while ch⁡\operatorname{ch} does.

In algebraic geometry the same formula, with Chern classes in the rational Chow ring CH⁡∗(X)⊗ℚ\operatorname{CH}^*(X) \otimes \Q of a smooth variety, defines ch⁡ ⁣:K0(X)→CH⁡∗(X)⊗ℚ\operatorname{ch} \colon K_0(X) \to \operatorname{CH}^*(X) \otimes \Q.
