Definition

Let MM be a smooth manifold, and let 𝔤𝔩n(ℂ)\mathfrak{gl}_n(\C) be the space of complex n×nn \times n matrices. Let AA be a smooth 𝔤𝔩n(ℂ)\mathfrak{gl}_n(\C)-valued 11-form on MM; it is a connection form on the trivial bundle M×ℂnM \times \C^n. Let F=dA+A∧AF = dA + A \wedge A be its curvature, where dd is the exterior derivative and ∧\wedge is the matrix wedge product. The Chern–Simons 33-form of AA is CS(A)=tr⁡(A∧dA+23 A∧A∧A).\mathrm{CS}(A) = \tr\Big(A \wedge dA + \tfrac23 \, A \wedge A \wedge A\Big).

Remarks

The defining property is d CS(A)=tr⁡(F∧F)d\, \mathrm{CS}(A) = \tr(F \wedge F). Check: dtr⁡(A∧dA)=tr⁡(dA∧dA)d \tr(A \wedge dA) = \tr(dA \wedge dA) and dtr⁡(A∧A∧A)=3tr⁡(dA∧A∧A)d \tr(A \wedge A \wedge A) = 3 \tr(dA \wedge A \wedge A) by cyclicity of the graded trace; while tr⁡(F∧F)=tr⁡(dA∧dA)+2tr⁡(dA∧A∧A)+tr⁡(A4)\tr(F \wedge F) = \tr(dA \wedge dA) + 2 \tr(dA \wedge A \wedge A) + \tr(A^4) and tr⁡(A4)=0\tr(A^4) = 0. Example: if n=1n = 1, then A∧A=0A \wedge A = 0, F=dAF = dA and CS(A)=A∧dA\mathrm{CS}(A) = A \wedge dA; on M=ℝ4M = \R^4 with coordinates x1,…,x4x_1, \dots, x_4 and A=x1 dx2+x3 dx4A = x_1 \, dx_2 + x_3 \, dx_4, one gets dA=dx1∧dx2+dx3∧dx4dA = dx_1 \wedge dx_2 + dx_3 \wedge dx_4, and both d(A∧dA)d(A \wedge dA) and F∧FF \wedge F equal 2 dx1∧dx2∧dx3∧dx42 \, dx_1 \wedge dx_2 \wedge dx_3 \wedge dx_4. Non-example: for non-abelian AA, the form tr⁡(A∧dA)\tr(A \wedge dA) alone does not have derivative tr⁡(F∧F)\tr(F \wedge F) in general, since the term 2tr⁡(dA∧A∧A)2 \tr(dA \wedge A \wedge A) is missing; the cubic term is needed. More generally, let ff be an invariant polynomial of degree kk as in the Chern–Weil homomorphism, and let ω\omega be a connection on a principal bundle PP. Put Ωt=t dω+t22[ω∧ω]\Omega_t = t\, d\omega + \frac{t^2}{2} [\omega \wedge \omega] and Tf(ω)=k∫01f(ω,Ωt,…,Ωt) dtTf(\omega) = k \int_0^1 f(\omega, \Omega_t, \dots, \Omega_t) \, dt. Then Tf(ω)Tf(\omega) is a (2k−1)(2k-1)-form on PP with d Tf(ω)=f(Ω,…,Ω)d \, Tf(\omega) = f(\Omega, \dots, \Omega). The 33-form above is the case f(X,Y)=tr⁡(XY)f(X, Y) = \tr(XY) in a trivialization. Under a gauge transformation A↦g−1Ag+g−1dgA \mapsto g^{-1} A g + g^{-1} dg, CS(A)\mathrm{CS}(A) changes by an exact form plus −13tr⁡((g−1dg)3)-\frac13 \tr\big((g^{-1}dg)^3\big), whose integral over a closed 33-manifold is an integer multiple of 8π28\pi^2 for G=SU(n)G = \mathrm{SU}(n).
