Definition

Let GG be a Lie group with Lie algebra 𝔤\mathfrak{g}, and let 𝕂\mathbb{K} be ℝ\R or ℂ\C. For k≥0k \ge 0, let Ik(G)I^k(G) be the space of symmetric kk-linear maps f:𝔤k→𝕂f : \mathfrak{g}^k \to \mathbb{K} that are invariant under the adjoint action: f(AdgX1,…,AdgXk)=f(X1,…,Xk)f(\mathrm{Ad}_g X_1, \dots, \mathrm{Ad}_g X_k) = f(X_1, \dots, X_k) for all g∈Gg \in G. Let π:P→M\pi : P \to M be a principal GG-bundle with a connection form ω\omega and curvature form Ω\Omega. For f∈Ik(G)f \in I^k(G), the 2k2k-form f(Ω,…,Ω)f(\Omega, \dots, \Omega) on PP (formed with the wedge product) equals π∗αf\pi^* \alpha_f for a unique closed 2k2k-form αf\alpha_f on MM. The Chern–Weil homomorphism is the map I∗(G)=⨁k≥0Ik(G)→HdReven(M;𝕂),f↦[αf],I^*(G) = \bigoplus_{k \ge 0} I^k(G) \to H^{\mathrm{even}}_{\mathrm{dR}}(M; \mathbb{K}), \quad f \mapsto [\alpha_f], into de Rham cohomology, which does not depend on the choice of ω\omega.

Remarks

The form f(Ω,…,Ω)f(\Omega, \dots, \Omega) descends to MM because Ω\Omega vanishes on vertical vectors and ff is Ad\mathrm{Ad}-invariant; it is closed by the Bianchi identity dΩ=[Ω∧ω]d\Omega = [\Omega \wedge \omega] and invariance. For two connections ω0,ω1\omega_0, \omega_1, the forms αf\alpha_f differ by the exterior derivative of a transgression form built from the path ωt=(1−t)ω0+tω1\omega_t = (1-t)\omega_0 + t\omega_1; so the class is independent of ω\omega. With the product of symmetric multilinear forms, I∗(G)I^*(G) is a commutative algebra and the map is an algebra homomorphism. Example: for G=U(1)G = \mathrm{U}(1), 𝔤=iℝ\mathfrak{g} = i\R and f(X)=i2πXf(X) = \frac{i}{2\pi} X, the class [αf][\alpha_f] is the first Chern class of the associated line bundle. For G=U(n)G = \mathrm{U}(n), det⁡(I+i2πΩ)\det\big(I + \frac{i}{2\pi} \Omega\big) gives the total Chern class, and its images are the characteristic classes with real coefficients.
