Circumcircle

Definition

Let ABCABC be a triangle in the Euclidean plane R2\mathbb{R}^2, with circumcentre OO and circumradius R=d(O,A)R = d(O, A), where dd is the Euclidean distance. The circumcircle of ABCABC is the circle with the centre OO and the radius RR: { X∈R2  :  d(X,O)=R }.\{\, X \in \mathbb{R}^2 \;:\; d(X, O) = R \,\}. It is the unique circle that contains AA, BB and CC.

Remarks

For a triangle in Rn\mathbb{R}^n, the circumcircle is the circle in the plane of the triangle with the centre OO and the radius RR. Mathlib's Affine.Simplex.circumsphere is the sphere with this centre and radius in the ambient space. The law of sines gives 2R=a/sin⁡α2R = a / \sin \alpha, with the side aa opposite the angle α\alpha. A polygon whose vertices all lie on one circle is a cyclic polygon. Each triangle is cyclic, but not each quadrilateral is.

Explanations

L1 human

Through any three points that are not on one line, there is exactly one circle. For a triangle, this is the circumcircle. For the right triangle with the vertices (0,0)(0, 0), (4,0)(4, 0) and (0,3)(0, 3), the circumcircle has the centre (2,1.5)(2, 1.5) and the radius 2.52.5.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 3 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
