Definition
Let be a field, let be a vector space over , and let be a quadratic form on . Let be the tensor algebra of . Let be the two-sided ideal of generated by the elements with . The Clifford algebra of is the quotient ring
Remarks
Universal property: for every associative unital -algebra and every linear map with for all , there is exactly one unital algebra homomorphism that extends . If , then , with basis the products , , for a basis of . Example: with . The relation with gives , and then ; so is the quaternion algebra with , , . For , the Clifford algebra is the exterior algebra of . Non-example: the tensor algebra for is not a Clifford algebra of , because is not a scalar there. Some authors use the opposite sign convention .
