Definition
Let be a topological space. A subset is clopen if is open in and is closed in . Equivalently, and its complement are both open.
Remarks
Example: let with the topology from . The set equals , so it is open in . Its complement equals , so it is open as well, and is closed.
Example: in the rationals with the topology from , the set is clopen, since .
Non-example: in , the set is not open, because no interval around lies inside it. It is not closed either.
In every space, and are clopen. A space is connected if and only if these are its only clopen subsets.
