Closable operator

Definition

Let XX and YY be normed spaces, and let TT be an unbounded operator from XX to YY. The operator TT is closable if it has an extension S⊇TS \supseteq T that is a closed operator.

Remarks

The following are equivalent.

  1. The operator TT is closable.
  2. The closure of the graph Γ(T)\Gamma(T) in X×YX \times Y is the graph of an operator.
  3. For every sequence (xn)(x_n) in D(T)D(T) with xn→0x_n \to 0 and Txn→yT x_n \to y, one has y=0y = 0.

Example: on C[0,1]C[0, 1] with the supremum norm, let D(T)D(T) be the space of polynomials and Tp=p′Tp = p'. If pn→0p_n \to 0 and pn′→gp_n' \to g uniformly, then pn(x)−pn(0)=∫0xpn′p_n(x) - p_n(0) = \int_0^x p_n' gives 0=∫0xg0 = \int_0^x g for all xx, so g=0g = 0; hence TT is closable.

Non-example: on L2(0,1)L^2(0, 1), let D(T)=C[0,1]D(T) = C[0, 1] and Tf=f(0)⋅𝟏Tf = f(0) \cdot \mathbf{1}, where 𝟏\mathbf{1} is the constant function 11. The functions fn(x)=max⁡(0,1−nx)f_n(x) = \max(0, 1 - n x) satisfy fn→0f_n \to 0 in L2(0,1)L^2(0, 1) but Tfn=𝟏T f_n = \mathbf{1} for all nn, so TT is not closable.
